This type of question is about analysing and evaluating the accuracy of the source. This means looking at the content of the source and who it was written by. You should try to reach a well-supported and developed judgement about the accuracy of the source.

Set your answer in the context of the period being studied. You should discuss the strengths and limitations of the source material and arrive at a judgement about its accuracy in revealing a particular historical issue. Consider the intended audience and how this might impact on the accuracy of the source.

Example:

To what extent does this source accurately reflect the seriousness of the Puritan threat?

In your answer you should refer to the strengths and limitations of the source and use your own knowledge and understanding of the historical context.

Source C

Let me warn you that there has risen, both in your Realm and mine, a dangerous Puritan sect that would have no Kings or Queens but rule by committee. I pray you stop the mouths or make shorter the tongues, of ministers who presume to speak out for the persecuted in England for the Gospel.

Elizabeth I, writing in a personal letter to James VI of Scotland (July 1590)

  • Look at both sides of the argument, ie consider the strengths and weaknesses of the source in telling you about a particular historical issue.
  • Make sure you reach a conclusion or judgement about the accuracy of the source.
  • Be guided by the number of marks for the question and the number of lines provided in the answer booklet as to how much you write.
