Printmaking

If you want to experiment with printmaking there are many techniques that don't require special equipment.

Techniques

  • Create monoprints and monotypes by building up watercolour or ink on a printing plate that paper is then pressed down on.
  • As an alternative cover the printing plate with ink and to remove sections to create a negative image
  • Create blocks for printing out of wood, acrylic or lino. The different qualities of each material will produce different levels of precision.
  • Build up an image using different textures, such as corrugated card, wood, bark, leaves or wallpaper with a raised pattern. Cover each area in a different colour and press on paper to create a collagraph print.
  • Scratch a pattern or image into a plastic or metal surface to create intaglio prints or etchings.
  • Try making a negative of an intaglio print by carefully covering the printing plate except for the scratched image

Whatever printing method you choose it is worth experimenting with the surface you print onto. Using wood, patterned paper, text or pages of text can all add to your image.
