Counting to 10
Can you count from 1 to 10, then back from 10 to 1?
Example 1
Here are some owls on a branch.
Some owls fly away.
How many owls are left on the branch?
What happened first?
First there were 6 owls sitting on the branch.
Then what happened?
Then 2 owls flew away.
How many are there now?
Now there were 4 owls left.
Look at the number sentence that goes with this story.
Example 2
There are 9 strawberries. Adil eats 3 strawberries. How many strawberries are left?
What happened first?
First there were 9 strawberries.
Then what happened?
Then Adil took 3 strawberries away.
How many are there now?
Now there are 6 strawberries left.
Can you see how this shows that 9 take away 3 leaves 6?
This can be shown as a calculation using the subtraction and equals signs.
9 - 3 = 6
This calculation can be shown as a part whole model too.
Can you see how 9 is made up of 6 and 3?
