2009: Supreme Court legally replaces House of Lords
The Supreme Court replaced the House of Lords as the UK鈥檚 highest court on 1 October 2009.
The Appellate Committee of the House of Lords had acted as the court of last resort since 1876. It had been comprised of 12 Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, also known as Law Lords.
These 12 Law Lords became the first justices of the new Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, and were disqualified from voting in the House of Lords until their retirement.
