Philip Hayton speaks live to veteran reporter Charles Wheeler as he stands at the Brandenburg Gate to consider the cultural differences between East and West Berliners.
Germany is the biggest and most industrialised nation in Europe, with a population of 82 million. It is a leader in manufacturing and vehicle exports, although the negative economic effects of reunification can still be felt today. The country's first female Chancellor, Angela Merkel, grew up in East Germany and was elected in 2005.
