1989: Exxon Valdez creates oil slick disaster

The oil tanker Exxon Valdez runs aground off the Alaskan coast in March 1989.

The Exxon Valdez hits the Bligh Reef, splitting its side open and releasing gallons of crude oil into the sea.

About 1,300 miles of coastline is contaminated as a result of the spill.
