1982: Queen fends off bedroom intruder

A man breaks into Buckingham Palace and spends ten minutes talking to the Queen in her bedroom on 9 July 1982.

Michael Fagan, 31, scaled the walls around the palace at about 07:15 BST, and shinned the drainpipe up to the Queen's private apartments.

He evaded electronic alarms as well as palace and police guards, before disturbing the Queen by opening a curtain.

The Queen was only able to raise the alarm when he asked for a cigarette. She calmly called for a footman who held the intruder until police arrived.
