Secretary of State for War Anthony Eden broadcasts to the nation about the return of the British Expeditionary Force from Belgium, describing a battle for the ports due to "events beyond control". The focus is on the fortitude and achievements of the BEF in the face of Hitler's forces.

Later in the transmission, mention is given to the embarkation at Dunkirk of nearly all of the BEF and to the necessary destruction of their equipment. The report is matter of fact and upbeat, asserting that good must be made from the losses and victory is still the aim.
