1986: Berlin disco bombed

A bomb exploded in a crowded discotheque in Berlin, Germany, on 5 April 1986.

American authorities in Berlin reported the deaths of an American soldier and a Turkish woman. A second US soldier died from injuries shortly after the blast.

The disco was a favourite with American servicemen, and many of the 200 people injured were soldiers.

In 2001, three men who had worked at the Libyan embassy in East Berlin were convicted in relation to the bombing. The wife of one of the men was also convicted.

This report was originally broadcast on 5 April 1986.
