1984: Pound notes replaced by coins
The Chancellor of the Exchequer announces plans to withdraw the 拢1 note on 12 November 1984.
Chancellor Nigel Lawson tells MPs that pound coins were slightly more expensive to produce, but would last up to 50 times longer.
The pound note was first issued in 1797 and was put into widespread use as an emergency measure to replace gold sovereigns during World War One.
