Steward Frederick Dent Ray describes how he was roused from his sleep and told that the Titanic had struck something. He calmly recounts how he gathered up his handkerchiefs and shaving materials before heading to the lifeboats. He describes loading the boats and recalls that some people thought they were safer staying in their cabins.
Ray later stopped working on ships and took up poultry farming. He died in 1977.
