Assisted suicide

This week Debbie Purdy, who suffers from progressive multiple sclerosis, failed in her application to the High Court for clarification as to whether her husband would face prosecution if he helped take her to a euthanasia clinic in Switzerland. In May 2006 a bill which would allow assisted suicide in the UK for terminal cases, with safeguards incorporated, was defeated by 148 votes to 100 in the House of Lords. As such assisting in another's suicide remains a criminal offence potentially carrying a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.

Would you want a loved one to be able to help you end your life, without fear of prosecution, if an illness made it unbearable?

Is it time for Parliament to debate again the issues involved in this important and very sensitive matter and clarify the law?

In denying physician or other methods of assisted death are we not simply encouraging physician or other methods of assisted "living death"?

Is the public mood to assisted suicide softening and what about the right of the individual to take decisions about their own life?
