Faith schools

The first state-funded Hindu school in Britain has just opened its doors igniting a debate about the role of faith schools generally. Although that school says classes will include study of other faiths one head teacher has expressed fears that plans to create more faith schools will result in children being "indoctrinated" in religious ghettos.

There are currently around 6,800, mostly Christian, faith schools in Britain. Ministers have signalled support to hundreds of groups from various faiths who want to set up their own state schools.

Could more faith schools jeopardise efforts to integrate religious groups? Is there a place for single faith schools in a multi faith society? Will the trend reawaken "the ghost of Northern Ireland" where segregated schools led to decades of division?
