North Easterners on the Front Line

Drawing its numbers from across our region, the Yorkshire Regiment spent months on a tour of duty at Camp Bastion in the dangerous Helmand Provice of Afghanistan. In 2009, 91热爆 Tees' Jonathan Swingler spent a fortnight with them.

The Regiment has been remembering two of its recent fallen; Corporal Damian Lawrence, of the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, who died when his patrol was struck by a landmine in Helmand province this month and Sergeant Lee Johnson from Stockton who was killed just before Christmas.

Jonathan Swingler

91热爆 Tees' Jonathan Swingler travelled to the front line in Afghanistan to meet local soldiers, see the work of the medical corps and find out whether the efforts of the military are having any effect on heroin production (Afghanistan is thought to supply 90% of Teesside's heroin).

He also be helped Middlesbrough Football Club answer some of the 10 requests a week they receive from service personnel, asking for merchandise and a taste of home.

The club recorded video messages for the troops and sent a signed "Green Howards' Boro Shirt".

Jonathan's Helmand Diaries

Throughout his time in the country Jonathan kept an audio diary, recording the people he met and the events he witnessed each day.
