Catterick's military heritage dates back to 80AD, when the Romans set up a camp at Cataratonium, near the Race Course.

After the Norman Conquest the original defensive role of Cataratonium was assumed by Richmond with the construction of Richmond Castle and its additional fortification in 1312.

By the end of the First World War, though Catterick had become nothing more than a storage area for redundant wartime equipment.

In fact, at one point there were 50,000 18-pounder field guns and 78,000 army lorries held on site.

In 1923 Catterick was declared a permanent military centre and a building programme was begun so that, by the start of the Second World War, Catterick was able to become a full scale training centre, and was also responsible for re-equipping and reorganising units for service overseas.
