Tutorial: 'Fee-fi-fo-fum!'
During the tutorial the children will:
- Learn the opening Chorus - singing with expression.
- Learn Verse 1 - singing the words clearly.
- Learn Verses 2 and 3 - doing stamping actions.
- Recognise the three note pattern in the chorus.
- Sing boldly, in character as the Giant.
- Do the actions of the song.
Song: 'Fee-fi-fo-fum!'
Encourage the children to sing the jumpy rhythm in the first two lines of each verse in time. Practise clapping the rhythm.
Think about the three note pattern in the chorus. The notes are low and close together.
Encourage children to really move their mouths, lips and tongues and to sing in character as the Giant.
The story
There are two episodes of the Jack and the Beanstalk story on each content page.
Episode 9
The pathway leads right up to the door of the castle. Jack knocks loudly on it and the door is opened by an enormous woman - a giant! She is so tall she can't see Jack down by her feet and he slips into the castle unseen.
Jack doesn't remain undiscovered for long though - the giant soon catches Jack, but he's relieved to discover she's friendly and wishes him no harm.
Her husband is another matter though and Jack hides from the Giant inside the oven. The Giant enters and sniffs the air - he can get the smell of a young boy and he's feeling hungry鈥
Episode 10
The Giant's wife persuades her husband that he cannot really smell a boy but instead his dinner which is on the table. The Giant sits down to his meal - ten whole cows and a huge plate of goose liver.
When the Giant has finished his food he calls for his bag of money, so that he can count all his coins. As soon as he has finished counting the Giant falls asleep and Jack emerges from the oven.
It turns out the money has been stolen and Jack suggests he takes it back with him to help the needy villagers. The Giant's wife gives him a great big wink - she's happy for Jack to do as he wishes.
Literacy links
Year 1: Talk about what the Giant eats for his dinner. Think about other things he might eat - really use your imagination! Cut out a circular piece of paper to be the Giant鈥檚 plate and draw / label the things on it he eats.
Year 2: As above, talk about what the Giant eats for his dinner. Children make up an illustrated menu for one of the Giant鈥檚 meals with three sections: 鈥楽tarter,鈥 鈥楳ain course鈥 and 鈥楶udding鈥 with some more extraordinary things for him to eat.
Listening music
An extract from 1st Movement, Symphony No 8 by Franz Schubert.
What might be happening if this music was telling our story? Perhaps the quiet opening music could be the Giant asleep after dinner鈥?
The high clarinet music which follows could be Jack creeping around the sleeping Giant鈥
And the loud chords at the end could be the Giant waking up and chasing Jack!
Comprehension quiz
Four questions about Episode 9 and four questions about Episode 10.
