So, what is this Instagram chatbot?

It’s your chance to predict how much impact your Instagram pics will have before you share them.

Simply start a conversation with the Tomorrow’s World chatbot on Facebook messenger and follow its lead – signing in to your Instagram account along the way.

Through machine learning, our chatbot can analyse the history of your account and then calculate an influence score for images you choose from your photo library, based on the previous performance of your photographs.

While you wait for its analysis, the chatbot provides you with some explanations of what makes a great Instagram photo.

Your photo’s analysis will be delivered to you as a personalised video that picks out the best features of your image. The video is then yours to share.

You mentioned machine learning… what’s that about?

Machine learning provides systems with the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. That’s what we’re doing here.

How did you use machine learning to build the chatbot?

We fed our chatbot a bunch of images.

The bot was taught to pick out features such as colour, landmarks and human emotions.

When these features were cross-referenced with how influential the pictures were on Instagram, we were able to develop an algorithm the chatbot could use to analyse pictures it hadn’t seen before.

Through this analysis, we can give the user an influence rating that will roughly equate to how much impact an image will have when posted on their Instagram account.

Any challenges along the way?

Technically, there were quite a few. The biggest was probably in working closely with Instagram to get them to approve our use of accessing their API.

This allowed us to draw in metadata from people's Instagram accounts in order to build an accurate algorithm.

We worked to build up a substantial training bot in order for Instagram to approve the project as without this we would not have been able to accurately provide scores on images taking into account follower numbers and previous images.

How does this fit in with Tomorrow’s World?

Tomorrow’s World is all about how the science and tech of the future will affect our lives. Artificial intelligence and machine learning in particular will have a huge impact on our work, social lives, and how we interact with the world. We are demonstrating this by showing users first-hand, using apps that millions are familiar with and use every day.

What do you hope to achieve with the chatbot?

We want to show how machine learning is capable of doing some amazing things. We’re also conscious that a topic like this can often be difficult to understand and not always easily accessible. By integrating the chatbot into Facebook messenger and delivering personalised videos you can share with your friends, we want to give users an insight in to artificial intelligence - in line with their usual social media habits.
