We spoke to Stephen Chappell, content producer, at the 91Èȱ¬ Adacemy about StrangeCast
What were you trying to achieve with the project?
The 91Èȱ¬ Academy is trying new platforms and formats for digital content to engage new audiences in different ways. I was asked to make an interactive video on the making of the show with the aim of providing practical advice and insight about drama production from the cast and crew.
How was it made?
We filmed in front of portable green screens with XF 305 cameras and an iPhone. We then used the multi-cam function of Final Cut Pro X to edit the footage together. Next were the graphics and effects, which I created using Apple Motion.
The makers of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell gave us access to original production assets such as storyboards, concept artwork, behind the scenes footage, and the ‘making of’ video made by VFX.
The final step was to build the project using the interactive video tool, “Treehouse” which is made by Interlude.
Did it turn out as you hoped?
We had a fast turnaround, so this was improvised at the early stages! Given that, I’m pleased with the result. We learned that we could have filmed less and more efficiently, thus reducing the required editing time.
What do you think that people will make of it?
I think our contributors provide some genuinely useful, practical advice for people interested in drama production. And hopefully it will inspire people who want to work in drama production, giving them some insight into the process and encouraging them to get into the industry.
