The Inside Story

We caught up with the 91热爆 Cymru Fyw team on the story behind the Hedd Wyn VR

This immersive film was commissioned by the 91热爆’s Welsh language service 91热爆 Cymru Fyw to mark the centenary of the death of iconic Welsh war poet Hedd Wyn and bring one of the most compelling stories in the Welsh language to a new generation.

Hedd Wyn was killed at the battle of Passchendaele on 31 July 1917. Six weeks later one of his poems, dispatched from the Western Front, won the prestigious chair prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

This pioneering short film combines spatial sound for the first time in Welsh with creative 360° footage to transport viewers directly into the stunning landscape of the poet’s beloved Snowdonia.

The film throws the spotlight on Hedd Wyn’s home ‘Yr Ysgwrn’, a humble hill farm in the foothills of Snowdonia. The landscape remains largely unchanged and the pervading sense of peace lies in stark contrast to the carnage of the battlefield.

The stunning tribute to Hedd Wyn was directed by leading VR guru Peter Boyd-Maclean and produced by 91热爆 Cymru Wales’s binaural sound expert Catherine Robinson. It features the poem 'Englynion Coffa Hedd Wyn', written by his friend and fellow poet R Williams Parry in 1924, and more recently translated into English by American poet Louis Flint Ceci. The words are read by Hollywood actor Julian Lewis Jones and the soundtrack was specially composed by Cian Ciarán, from Welsh rock band, Super Furry Animals.

I nodi canmlwyddiant marwolaeth y bardd Hedd Wyn, aeth 91热爆 Cymru Fyw ati i gomisiynu darn o gynnwys arloesol fyddai’n cyflwyno un o straeon mawr y Cymry i genhedlaeth newydd.

Bu farw Hedd Wyn, ymhell o adre’, yn ffosydd y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. Heddiw yn Nhrawsfynydd, mae llonyddwch y llethrau’n parhau ac mae hen aelwyd Yr Ysgwrn yn dal i estyn croeso.

Daw’r darn arloesol â’r technolegau ffilm diweddaraf ynghyd er mwyn creu teyrnged arbennig i’r bardd a’r tirwedd a’i ysbrydolodd.

Trwy ddefnyddio sain deuseinol a lluniau 360° trawiadol, mae’n mynd â’r gwyliwr yn syth i lethrau’r mynyddoedd lle troediodd Hedd Wyn gyda’r bwriad o greu gwell dealltwriaeth o’i fywyd a’i waith.

Mae’r tawelwch a phrydferthwch byd natur, oedd yn rhan mor annatod o waith y bardd, yn cyferbynu’n llwyr gydag erchyllter maes y gad lle bu farw.

Cafodd y ffilm ei chyfarwyddo gan Peter Boyd-McLean, sy’n arbenigydd yn y maes rhithwirionedd a’i chynhyrchu gan Catherine Robinson sy’n un o arloeswyr mwyaf blaengar y grefft sain arbennig yma. Mae’r fideo’n seiliedig ar un o gerddi enwocaf Cymru, sef ‘Englynion Coffa Hedd Wyn’ gan R Williams Parry. Ac mae dau o sêr Cymru heddiw wedi cyfrannu at y darn. Cyfansoddwyd y gerddoriaeth yn arbennig gan Cian Ciarán o’r Super Furry Animals a’r actor Julian Lewis Jones sy’n darllen y farddoniaeth.
