We quiz the people behind the quiz, Jenny Springett and Aniello De Santi, to see if we can get some answers of our own.
What is ‘I Am Smarter Than’?
It’s an interactive video-quiz where you can beat the celebs at their favourite subjects.
What did you set out to achieve?
We wanted to create the first interactive-video quiz that gives everyone the same thrilling experience that a contestant in a TV studio would feel when taking part in one of our quiz shows.
Quiz shows are traditionally favoured by older viewers and we wanted to find a way to bring the format to a younger audience through the use of celebs, technology and personalised interaction.
Tell us more about the personal interaction
We really wanted to create a personal experience for each player so we refer to people using their own name, celebs address them directly - talking straight into the camera as if they were skyping – we used lots of these tricks and techniques to help us create this personal interaction – something we don’t think has ever been done before!
Because players get a one-on-one interaction with celebs and the stars react in real time to how well the player is doing, we are providing a unique and personal experience for everyone.
How was making this different to producing a quiz show for TV?
Developing and producing new quizzes is our bread and butter but the differences in the ways audiences interact with interactive content significantly changed the way we needed to think about it during development.
There was no ‘rule book’ of interactive quizzes for us to follow which meant that for everything we wanted to achieve we first had to ask “how are we going to realise that?”
And how did you realise ‘Am I Smarter Than…’?
We used Interlude to create the interactivity, it's an interactive video platform that allows you to navigate and stitch together the various individual video clips. We used a text-to-voice company, Acapela, to create the ‘host’ for the quiz that allowed us to have very tight control over the duration of voice overs which was crucial for this interactive format.
We worked very closely alongside our external tech partners ‘The Connected Set’ and between us we had the expertise to make the production. This was a truly collaborative partnership and one that we would hope to continue after the project has finished.
