We鈥檝e been experimenting with voice recognition. Through speech alone, this is a new way to get 91热爆 News, weather and travel鈥ry 鈥榙o I need an umbrella today?鈥 Use your voice to get the info you want. It鈥檚 hands-free 91热爆!
Is this anything to do with the TV show The Voice?
No, this is an experiment into how we can use voice recognition with 91热爆 content.
A bit like they have on smart phones?
Exactly! We feel that speech offers a more natural and powerful way to interact with computers and it seems particularly suited to the vast range of data offered by the 91热爆. The content we deliver is simplified and condensed to directly answer a users question such as 鈥渢ell me the weather tomorrow鈥, 鈥減lay me the Radio 1 Live Lounge set from yesterday鈥, 鈥渨hat is on TV tonight鈥?
So, can I ask it anything?
Not just yet. It鈥檚 a very basic prototype to demonstrate the concept. We only had two days to complete the prototype initially and so many of the more interesting ideas could not be tackled. We feel there is huge potential for a real product here given enough time to develop.
What would you do with more time?
If the idea were popular we would like to spend time exploring it in more depth. We feel there is a great value here in being able to quickly get access to key 91热爆 information whilst on the move.
How does it work?
We used the recent Speech Recognition and Speech Synthesis Javascript APIs that are built into the Google Chrome browser. It鈥檚 great to see this sort of technology start to become part of our web browser鈥檚 capabilities rather than depend on third party service. Given enough time we feel this would work really well on mobile devices and around the home.
And what would you want to find out, when people try it on Taster?
To understand whether user's will be receptive to this kind of technology and to see if it could help users find information faster. It may also be a helpful technology for disabled users who might struggle to find information from our websites.
