We caught up with The Space to talk about this fascinating collaboration between themselves and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Ai Weiwei 360 is a commission by The Space in partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts, produced by AVM, with contributions from Ai Weiwei, Tim Marlow (Artistic Director, Royal Academy), Adrian Locke (Senior Curator, Royal Academy), Julian Assange (WikiLeaks) and voice-over by Jon Snow (Channel 4 news).
How does this compare to the Royal Academy exhibition?
We wanted to give people a real sense of the physical gallery space, to offer an experience where you can explore the exhibition room by room, exhibit by exhibit. To add to this sense of place we created pieces of video and audio content that provide you with some context and detail around each of the rooms and exhibitions.
The experience includes contributions from the curators and Julian Assange, with Jon Snow providing an introduction to each room and video interviews with Ai Weiwei. Most of all, we wanted to open up this fantastic exhibition to even more people.
Can you tell us how we can interact with Ai Weiwei 360?
You can explore easily on your desktop, tablet or mobile; pan round 360 views of the galleries, click on each exhibit and hear commentary from the curators or introductions to each room from Jon Snow. In addition, Ai Weiwei 360 is the first exhibition to be captured in photorealistic stereoscopic 3D. It is available on both Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard. This immersive work combines high definition sound and stereoscopic 3D imagery with user-driven navigation to re-create the physical viewing experience.
How was it made?
The exhibition was captured using traditional linear video as well as panoramic 3D video which is converted to 360 video and virtual reality.
A more traditional method was used to record sound and vision. We recorded atmospheric sound from the actual exhibition and added a music soundtrack. The audio recordings with the curators of the exhibition were made at the Royal Academy, and the piece with Julian Assange was recorded in the Ecuadorian embassy.
