Gary Wilson hopes his impressive form this season will mean he can give up his job as a taxi driver in January.

The 28-year-old from Wallsend is the current world number 91 but beat 2012 World Championship quarter-finalist Jamie Jones 6-0 on the opening day of the UK Championship in York on Tuesday.

"It's a big decision to make," said the 2004 World Under-21 champion.

"I'll see how it goes. If I do well and keep progressing then hopefully at the end of January I can give this 100%."

Wilson made the last four at this season's second European Tour event in Rotterdam where he lost 4-3 to tournament winner Mark Williams.

But the north east potter, who also reached the last 16 at the Indian Open, said the victory over Williams' fellow Welshman Jones was probably the best he had played this season.

"I am pleased with the way things are going and have had a few good results," Wilson added.

"I am definitely confident for the rest of the season and I'm hopeful I can push on."

He also said he enjoyed the new revamped format of the UK Championships which means the top 128 players are all in action at the first-round stage.

"It's given everyone a chance in round one," he said. "I think it's the way forward for every tournament."
