Meanwhile, Australian Vinnie Calabrese beat Wales's Dominic Dale 6-5 and Tom Ford lost 6-2 to Thailand's world number 110 Noppon Saengkham in the other game of the afternoon session.

The evening session saw world number 95 Jamie O'Neill bridge a 57-place ranking gap to beat Mark Joyce 6-2 with breaks of 66, 110, 85 and 89.

China's Xiao Guodong recorded a 6-1 win over Wales's Andrew Pagett while Mark King beat Ross Muir of Scotland by the same score. Ireland's Fergal O'Brien beat Alex Davies 6-2.
