Liverpool and Villarreal have met just twice before in European competition.

It came in the same Europa League season in which the Reds would lose to Unai Emery's Sevilla in the final.

The Reds and Yellow Submarine both won their home leg of the 2015-16 semi-final. But Liverpool's 3-0 home leg victory sealed the 3-1 aggregate win. A Bruno Soriano own goal and efforts from Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana sealed it.

Only in 2017-18 (10) has Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah scored more Champions League goals in a single campaign than the eight he’s notched this season, moving his tally for the club onto 33.

The Egyptian is now just three behind both Didier Drogba (Chelsea) and Sergio Aguero (Man City) for the most goals netted in the competition for an English side (36 each).

Would you believe that for all their progress in the Champions League, for all the talk of how key Anfield is to the Reds, they are actually without a win at home in four knock-out games in the competition?

    It's true.

Since the 4-0 victory against Barcelona in the 2018-19 semi-final second leg (I mean, we all remember that, right?!), the Reds have lost 3-2 against Atletico Madrid (to crash out in the 2019-20 last 16), drawn 0-0 with Real Madrid (to complete a 3-1 aggregate loss in the 2020-21 quarter-finals) and lost 1-0 to Inter and drawn 3-3 with Benfica in the last two rounds this season (thankfully without costing them their spot in the competition).

Klopp's side need to correct that form. They definitely won't want to be going to Spain without an advantage in the tie after tonight. Especially as Villareal's recent victory against Valencia made it 12 home games without defeat in all competitions for Unai Emery's side (W8 D4).

Well, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is now playing, so Jurgen is going to get the usual ritual from this Anfield crowd at least.

  17. Klopp urges Anfield crowd to be 'on top of game'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 27 April 2022

    Liverpool v Villarreal (20:00 BST)

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to play their part in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against Villarreal.

The Reds boss hopes to use the Anfield atmosphere to his side's advantage as they chase a third Champions League final in five seasons.

He said: "We know that when we go to Villarreal, whichever result we get tomorrow night, there will be an incredibly emotional atmosphere there and that is what we have to create.

"It’s nice if you play first away and you have a result you can fight for at home, with your crowd - but who cares? That’s not how it is.

"We have to make sure we are really completely on top of our game - everybody in the stadium.

"Our supporters are smart supporters. They watch football and they know Villarreal are strong. There are moments where we will suffer tomorrow night, definitely. I know that now already, and that’s what we have to be ready for - there is no need to get nervous. But we can make them suffer as well, and we have to do that all together.

"This advantage at home, we have to use. I don’t know which result we will get, but we will work with it and fight at Villarreal, because it means everything to us to reach the Champions League final."

  18. Goals galorepublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 27 April 2022

    Liverpool v Villarreal (20:00 BST)

Since a 2-1 victory in Merseyside over Everton back in August 2005, Villarreal haven’t managed to win any of their last eight away games in England in all competitions (D3 L5); already tasting defeat at Old Trafford in the group stages earlier this season.

During his managerial career, Villarreal boss Unai Emery has faced Liverpool five times (once with Sevilla and four times with Arsenal), with those matches producing 26 goals (5.2 per game on average), and both teams netting in each.

I wouldn't mind that trend continuing tonight!

  20. Liverpool to play twice in final week of seasonpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 27 April 2022

    Liverpool v Villarreal (20:00 BST)

Some fixture rearrangement news from earlier that will significantly affect the Reds...

Liverpool will now play twice in the final week of the Premier League season after the rearranged games were announced.

Jurgen Klopp's quadruple-chasing side will now travel to Southampton on 17 May, three days after their FA Cup final against Chelsea.

They end the league season against Wolves at Anfield on 22 May.

Title rivals and leaders Manchester City face West Ham at the London Stadium on 15 May before finishing at home to Aston Villa, also on 22 May.

City's rearranged fixture from April sees them play Wolves away on 11 May, meaning they face three league games in seven days.

Liverpool's match against Southampton was rearranged after they secured their place in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 14 May.

This season's Carabao Cup winners trail City by just one point in the Premier League with five games remaining.

The final of the Champions League is on 28 May.
