What a night. Two dramatic ties, one of them an absolute classic.

Chelsea, the reigning champions, are out and we know two of our four Champions League semi-finalists.

But who will join La Liga duo Real Madrid and Villarreal? Manchester City or Atletico Madrid will battle it out to face Real, with Liverpool and Benfica both eyeing a showdown with the Yellow Submarine.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BT Sport: "We are always [disappointed] but these are the kind of defeats we can digest and swallow as we left nothing to regret out there. We showed the quality and character this team has and deserved to go through, it was not meant to be today, we were simply unlucky.

"It is most important how we play and the input from the players - how lively did we play within a tactic, how much discipline did we have within the spaces - this was up to the fullest, so full credit to the players. To do it over 90 minutes was simply unlucky not to go through.

"I didn't see the goal disallowed andI I am very disappointed the referee does not check it by himself, I feel {over both games] it was 51 on the other side with all the decisions made but that is how it is when you play Real Madrid in the Champions League.

"There is nothing to regret. We had a huge deficit to overcome because we did big mistakes in the first leg and today both goals come from mistakes from us - they took advantage of the msitakes with individual quality and that was enough because over the two legs we did too many of these big mistakes."

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger speaks to BT Sport: "The positive is we didn't give up. Not many teams can come and dominate them as we did. But over the two legs if you make these kind of mistakes like we did, you get punished.

"The game plan was to find our number 10s. To find the space. We found it and got the goal. We didn't panic. In the second half we did everything we could but over the two legs, as I said, you make these mistakes you get punished.

"It was a do or die for us. I think before the game not everybody thought we would have the 3-0. For them the individual class comes to light with Modric and Benzema."

History dictates Real Madrid get to a certain level, there is always pressure to get to a certain point - always the pressure is to get to the semis, the quarters, God forbid you get knocked out in the last-16 or the group stage. They get to that position all the time. The first game they lost to Sheriff Tiraspol and you think it's finished, now they're in the semi-finals.

Real Madrid go 3-0 down and other teams would have capitulated, but they have that experience and know how to stay in the game - there is still an opportunity, and they were decisive when that moment came.

Bayern forward Thomas Muller: "If you take just this game into account, without the first game, we should have gone through convincingly. It's difficult to accept this. I don't know what to say."

Villarreal forward Gerard Moreno: "We feel a lot of happiness. Ever since the draw paired us with Bayern, we have been telling ourselves that we could do it. The belief and the way this team competes has helped us to achieve it.

"In the first leg we made the mistake of not finishing the tie, and all the comments serve as motivation for us. They made the mistake today of not killing us off and we took advantage of that. What this team has done is great."

The brilliance of the game at the Bernabeu has somewhat overshadowed a stunning win for Villarreal tonight, knocking out Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League semis for the first time in 16 years.

Luka Modric has four assists in the Champions League this season, his best return in a single campaign.

Since he joined Real Madrid in 2012-13, only Cristiano Ronaldo has more assists for them in the competition (20) than the Croatian (16).

The assist tonight must surely be the best of the lot.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric speaks to BT Sport: "Unbelievable to describe this game. We were dead until the goal we scored. Chelsea scored three goals, maybe the first a bit lucky from a deflection. I can't say we played badly. They used their chances well and scored the goals. We didn't give up. We kept believing, fighting and in the end showed huge character.

"This stadium and the fans were very helpful when we were losing 3-0. They kept supporting us and it gave us a boost to keep believing.

"The manager did great changes. They did well. In this competition experience is playing an important role and I think today it helped us a bit. For me, they are the most difficult team to play against. they are a tough, physical team. We knew it would be tough.

"In the end we showed great character, desire and togetherness to manage to turn it around. A defeat that is very sweet."

Steve is referring to Marcos Alonso's disallowed goal that would have made it 4-3 on aggregate to Chelsea had he not touched the ball with his hand before lashing in.

Of course, Chelsea did then subsequently make it 4-3 through Timo Werner's goal, and that definitely flattened the Real fans again.

You can't complain. This leg wasn't the one that sent them out. It was the first one where you don't bring the best version of yourself. When you play the top teams you can't afford a 90 minute spell where you are not at your best. They have conceded five goals. Last season they were built on defence. You have to have a clean sheet mentality. They leave themselves open on times.

I am still purring over the Modric pass to be honest. I don't think there is anyone else in world football who can deliver that on the money.

Chelsea invested so much in the game. Tuchel said we have to invest so much and they did. They put hearts and souls into this game. Real Madrid looked lost. They looked like they didn't have a clue, like they were short of confidence. But they have players who produce moments. Today it was Modric, Courtois and Benzema.

Real Madrid have reached the semi-final of the European Cup/Champions League for the 31st time. That is at least 11 more than any other side.

In the last four, they await the winner of the tie between Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, the second leg of which takes place tomorrow. City lead 1-0.
