Nelson Mandela: How can Liverpool qualify with a draw against Ajax if Atalanta win next match?

Ajax still have to play Atalanta so both can't win three points.

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp talking to BT Sport: "It was not a good game. From both teams, didn't create a lot, until they scored the goals.

"A deserved defeat in a difficult game. The ref didn't whistle a lot and that makes it even more difficult, for both sides. It was unbelievably intense and you need some breaks.

"When the first half is gone, you usually settle but for some players who didn't play for a while it was very intense for them. We didn't find a way in the game.

"Easier to talk about a good game. We had moments but not real chances. It could happen to other teams. You ask us to go Saturday at 12:30, which is nearly a crime. That is nothing to do with the result, but congratulations to you.

"Thumbs up, no injuries and we go again."

    FT: Liverpool 0-2 Atalanta

Each of the last three sides to win their first ever away game against Liverpool in all competitions have been Italian clubs (Fiorentina in December 2009, Udinese in October 2012, Atalanta today). Indeed, Atalanta are the first side to win their first ever such visit to Anfield by more than one goal since Spartak Moscow in November 1992 (also 2-0).

For the first time since Opta began recording shot data in the Champions League in 2003-04, Liverpool failed to attempt a single shot on target in a home game in the competition.

Liverpool attempted just one shot in the first half against Atalanta (Mo Salah in the 44th minute), their lowest in the opening 45 minutes of a competitive match at Anfield since January 2017 in a Premier League game against Chelsea (also one).

Jurgen Klopp laughs when he's asked if it was a frustrating night for him.

"Yes. Of course! It was not a good match."

He's speaking to BT Sport now.

Inter Milan’s Arturo Vidal (also Juventus and Barcelona) is the third player to be sent off for three different sides in the Champions League after Patrick Vieira (Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Juventus, Inter Milan and PSG).

Real Madrid’s Rodrygo scored just 32 seconds after coming on a substitute, also scoring from the bench in the reverse fixture earlier this month. The Brazilian has been directly involved in nine goals in his nine Champions League matches (six goals and three assists).

Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski scored his 71st Champions League goal, levelling Raul as the joint-third top scorer in the competition’s history.

Only Kylian Mbappe (12) has assisted more UEFA Champions League goals than Dusan Tadic (10) since his Ajax debut in the competition in September 2018, with the Serbian setting up his side’s opening two goals this evening.

Tambuwal: To be honest we deserved to lose tonight, Atalanta deserved 3point, they outclassed us. Thiago, Keita or Chamberlain must be fit before weekend.

Samuel: Feel like Liverpool had a dodgy lasagne last night.

  8. 'It's still in our hands'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2020

    Liverpool

Liverpool's James Milner, speaking to BT Sport: "We didn't get going. We know it was a poor performance and that we were pretty flat.

"A lot of players have not played together and the schedule is busy. Sometimes you have to try and get a win without being your best but we didn't have that sharpness.

"We are still top of the group so we have to recover and go again at the weekend. The effort is always there. They took their chances at the right time. The whole game we were maybe a second late on the press and created very few chances.

"It was one of those nights where we didn't produce our best. We need to move on from it pretty quickly because we have a lot of games coming up. It's in our hands and we have to look where we can improve."

We're into the second minute of added time now. You could probably add on another 20 minutes and Liverpool wouldn't look any nearer to scoring.

It's not been their day at all.
