It's not just national pride and ending a 22-year wait to reach a major finals at stake for Scotland in Belgrade tonight - but much needed finances too, chief sportswriter Tom English suggests.

You can read his pre-match thoughts here. It's well worth a few minutes of your time.

    Serbia v Scotland (19:45)

Thousands of you had a go at our selector to choose your team for tonight, and the results are pictured below.

It won't reflect Steve Clarke's formation choice you suspect, given he's been opting for a back-three, but the personnel will probably be largely the same!

Disagree? You can still pick your own team here, and share it with us @91Èȱ¬SportScot on Twitter.

  6. Scotland's last major finals appearance?published at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    Serbia v Scotland (19:45)

We know this off by heart now... Scotland's men last starred at a major finals 22 years ago at France 98.

On the afternoon of 10 June, John Collins equalised against the mighty Brazil from the penalty spot, sending the Scotland fans inside the 80,000 capacity Stade de France - and millions watching back home - bananas.

Alas, the famous yellow shirts would go on to win Scotland's opening match of the finals - courtesy of a Tom Boyd own goal.

    • Deep Impact was on our cinema screens

  8. How did we get here?published at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

The beautiful, magnificent Nations League of course. Way back in 2018 under previous manager Alex McLeish, Scotland topped a League C section ahead of Israel and Albania to secure a path to Euro 2020.

Another failed campaign, which cost McLeish his job, followed, but that play-off was always looming. And last month new boss Steve Clarke led his men to a penalty shootout win against Israel at Hampden.

So here we are. One game from the Euros.

  9. Who's ready for a dose of optimism?published at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

Afternoon! Tonight could be a seminal moment in the history of the Scotland national team as they have the chance to end their two-decade wait for a major finals.

There's plenty of time ahead for nerves, trepidation and disappointment, so this will be a place of serene optimism this afternoon...kind of.
