The big story of the afternoon came at Hillsborough, where Fulham beat Sheffield Wednesday to keep their automatic promotion hopes very much alive.

A huge win for Barnsley at the bottom of the table takes them to within two points of fourth-from-bottom Bolton, whose miserable away form continued with a 3-0 thumping against Derby.

The Tykes beat Sheffield Wednesday in a lunchtime kick-off and also have a game in hand on all their rivals.

Burton's hopes are fading, but things could have been so much better. They led Birmingham until the closing stages but ended up drawing 1-1, the second time they have conceded late on and ended up with a point in two matches.

The Brewers and Sunderland, who also drew, are seven points from safety with five to play. Albion also have a shocking goal difference.

Blues move above Bolton thanks to that late point, while Reading's second win in three - a 1-0 home success over Preston - keeps them five points above the drop zone.

It's getting tasty at the top of the Championship.

Fulham's win at Sheffield Wednesday, courtesy of Aleksandar Mitrovic's second-half strike, means the Whites are unbeaten in 19 games and just two points behind Cardiff.

The Bluebirds have a game in hand but they have to respond to Friday night's unsettling defeat against Wolves. Interesting times.

The play-off picture remains as clear as mud. Villa look certain to make it despite the defeat against Norwich.

Derby are in fifth on 68 points with a game in hand on their rivals. But just three points separate the Rams, Middlesbrough and Millwall, the seventh-placed Lions having beaten Bristol City, who remain eighth on 62 points.

Barnet still have it all to do, but their 1-0 win over Forest Green leaves them just four points behind Rovers in the fight to avoid relegation to the National League.

Grimsby took a big stride towards victory with their 1-0 win against Chesterfield, a result which left the Spireites rooted to the foot of the table.

At the other end of the division, Exeter's success at Cambridge means that they are just two points outside the automatic promotion spots.

Blackburn had to fight hard to claim victory against visitors Southend, but Will Grigg's hat-trick made for a much easier three points for Wigan against MK Dons.

Neal Maupay's penalty keeps Brentford in the play-off hunt, helping his side grind out victory against visitors Ipswich.

Hull take a huge stride towards safety, proving far too much for QPR to handle at the KCOM Stadium.

That result leaves the Tigers seven points above the drop.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is the matchwinner once again for Fulham, who are now just two points behind second placed Cardiff.

Nine goals in nine games for the on-loan Newcastle man and it means Fulham are now undefeated in 19 games. What a run.

If they pip the Bluebirds to second spot, no one can say they haven't earned it.

Lukas Jutkiewicz's late header helped Blues move up to 20th in the table to overtake Bolton, who lost 3-0 to Derby after former Blues winger Lloyd Dyer put the Brewers ahead at St Andrew's.

The draw leaves Burton rooted at the foot of the Championship table after Sunderland drew 1-1 at Leeds.

That win is vital for Reading's hopes of ensuring Championship next season. It keeps them five points clear of the bottom three, following Barnsley's win earlier in the day

Mo Barrow's first-half goal was the difference between the sides and Paul Clement has a second win in three games as Royals boss.

Pablo Hernandez cancels out Paddy McNair's opener for the Black Cats, who remain 23rd in the Championship.

Rochdale's lead against Portsmouth is once again short-lived, Matt Done's own-goal making it 3-3 in added time.

The good news for Dale fans is that rivals Wimbledon have also been pegged back, Lee Novak scoring for Scunthorpe to make it 1-1 at Kingsmeadow.

A fifth game in a row without a goal for Aitor Karanka's Nottingham Forest, who are unable to stop play-off chasing Middlesbrough easing to victory thanks to two first-half goals.

Bolton were much improved after the break but in truth, the moment Tom Lawrence made it 3-0 after the break, the game was done and dusted.

Derby strengthen their play-off challenge with a second win in two.
