Australia captain Pat Cummins: "It is the dream start really and it wasn’t a bad toss to lose. We all bowled really well and I’m really proud of how consistent everyone was. It was a really good start.

"I’m so happy for Starcy – that’s why he opens the bowling because he’s got a knack of picking up wickets in the first few overs.

"I was probably going to bat but it was 50-50 – I didn’t think it would have a huge bearing on the match. I felt like it would be better after lunch and it was a pretty standard day one Gabba pitch."

On England's decision to leave Stuart Broad and James Anderson: "I thought at least one of them would play in every game, if not both of them. We were surprised but they’ve got plenty of other bowlers to step in and pose us a challenge."

It's not good viewing for an England fan but essential.

England batter Ollie Pope on BT Sport: "We didn't get the score that we wanted today. I felt good out there and it was frustrating to get out and not get a big score but the game situation led to some positive batting being needed. It was frustrating that neither me or Jos [Buttler] could kick on.

"The pitch was quite tennis-ball bounce so I realised earlier on we could leave and when there was lateral movement is when the nick came back into play.

"We won't necessarily put it down to the lack of preparation. They did bowl well. We won't talk about the preparation necessarily because we've hit a lot of balls since we've been here but hopefully next time we'll get some more runs.

"We were keen to get out there tonight but we realised too that if the ball gets ruined we can't do what we wanted with it. We need to see both teams bat to know what a good score is but we need to take our chances and put the squeeze on."

But after Buttler was prised out, England's innings didn't last too much longer.

Chris Woakes made 21 but that was about it.

Pat Cummins ended with 5-38 - the bowler making a dream start to his first Test as Australia captain.

Ollie Pope's and Jos Buttler's partnership will be a blueprint for England in this series.

I don't necessarily mean like Buttler hitting Josh Hazlewood back over his head but he was committing to his shots, while Pope was rotating at the other end and the scoreboard just moved.

It was the only time all day where Australia looked a little bit under pressure. Nathan Lyon had to come on and we saw slightly more defensive fields.

Haseeb Hameed dug in admirably and fought his way through to lunch alongside Ollie Pope.

He fell in the first over after the break, however, and England were 60-5.

Then came the only real period England were in the contest. Jos Buttler counter-attacked and Ollie Pope batted well.

They put on 52, scoring 39 and 35 respectively.

We're all talking about the pink-ball games but the one thing that England will have wanted is to come to an Australian ground and see the pitch covered in green grass and massive clouds overhead but they decided to bat. I can't quite understand it.

Australia's bowlers are professional and high-class. What they can do is run up and hit the top of off stump. All they really had to do was run up and execute the biggest and simple skill they've got in their bowling armoury, which is hitting a good length outside off stump.

Australia were enabled I'm afraid by England deciding to have a bat. I couldn't quite believe that, I'm sorry.

After Burns trudged back to the dressing room - his place in Ashes history secured - Dawid Malan, Joe Root and Ben Stokes didn't last much longer.

England were soon 29-4.

I was very surprised by England's team. I found it quite hard to believe - a really difficult decision to work out.

You lost James Anderson, although he was fit to play we're told, but you can understand why with Adelaide next week you wouldn't want to risk him.

Broad is fit and he's absolutely got the sign of this top order. If you go through the figures of 2019, he took 13 wickets for 94 against the top order, not only do the Australian top order know it, Broad knows it as well. England have chosen not to go into the first Test with 1,150 wickets between them and I find it difficult to understand the Broad decision. What will have Australia thought when they saw he wasn't playing?

Turn over and go back to sleep. This is not going to make pleasant reading if you're an England fan.

Joe Root's men have crumbled on day one of the Ashes series. Having elected to bat, they lost Rory Burns - bowled by Mitchell Starc - to the very first ball of the day and have been bowled out for 147.

Joe Root was out for a duck and Ben Stokes five. Only Jos Buttler (39) and Ollie Pope (35) come out of the day with any sort of credit.

It has been a damaging, deflating day for England's Ashes hopes at the very start. Australia, meanwhile, were brilliant and their new captain Pat Cummins began his reign with a five-wicket haul.

A storm then prevented Australia's reply getting under way.

Oh and England haven't picked Stuart Broad.

And now the umpires have called an end to the day.

It has been a miserable opening for England.

They have been bowled out for 147 and then rain has prevented them striking a few blows of their own.

England fans are clinging onto a partnership of 52 between Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler as their highlight.

It could have been even worse without it.

Another shoutout for Ollie Pope too. I liked how busy he was. He was doing defensive pushes and then looking for singles, even if they weren't there, but just looking in case they were.

I didn't like the shot that he got out too very much, but it was a very good catch.

He played some really nice wristy shots and he looked like a man who should score some runs in this series. He just looked well equipped to be playing on these surfaces.

Burns' dismissal will certainly go down in history. A moment you couldn't believe was happening but on the other hand you really knew it was coming.

Ben: Can’t decide whether the Burns first baller was equal to or worse than Harmy’s delivery to second slip in 2006. Will just file it under depressing inevitability I suppose.

The inspection is still ongoing. The umpires are now checking the light. We've had no word on whether we'll get more play. They need to start by 7am UK time.

What an absolute dream day for Pat Cummins.

What I thought was interesting was Mitchell Starc took a wicket with the very first ball and then 11 balls later he took him off and brought himself on. People did ask about "how do you do that as a captain?" but he didn't have any qualms about doing it because the ball wasn't swinging very much.

He does seem like a really leveled bloke.

England will have fancied their chances of getting through the first hour, you know there are going to be difficult periods. I do think there was evidence there - when Stokes played a few shots and Buttler was going and he hit Hazlewood over his head a couple of times - to suggest that the ball was skipping onto the bat once it lost its hardness. I can understand why England made that decision but unfortunately it hasn't gone right for them.

The umpires have just wandered out for this inspection. England would love to get out there and boost morale with a few wickets in the gloom.
