  1. Eng 31-1 (target 239)published at 9 overs

Perry begins her fifth over at the River End, Taylor doubles her score with a single, while Knight steers one to Elyse Villani who's acting as the cover sweeper at this stage. But England release the pressure as Perry serves up a full toss which Taylor punches over mid-on for four.

And the "who will win the Women's Ashes?" vote has closed - 88% of you went for England, 12% for Australia. Thanks to all of you who voted.

  2. Eng 25-1 (Knight 8*, Taylor 1*)published at 8 overs

Knight helps herself to a well-run two as England look to rebuild after losing their captain.

  4. Eng 23-1 (target 239)published at 7 overs

Sarah Taylor chops her first ball down to Holly Ferling at third man, Knight rotates the strike, and Perry nearly has a second wicket in the over as Taylor plays and misses. A no-ball gives her a free hit, but she can only smear the extra delivery straight to mid-wicket.

Elsewhere in the world of cricket, England's men have announced their squad for the third Test - with Jonny Bairstow recalled in place of Gary Ballance.

I used to have three favourite bowling actions - Isa Guha (but don't tell her), Jhulan Goswami, and Ellyse Perry, with that lovely high arm.

    Edwards b Perry 15 (Eng 20-1)

Heartbreak for Edwards as she reaches for a ball outside off stump and gets a bottom edge onto her stumps. Big wicket for Australia who celebrate wildly.

Nothing really in the wicket for the bowlers at the moment.

  8. Eng 20-0 (Jonassen 3-0-7-0)published at 6 overs

Australia persist with Jonassen's left-arm spin, and it seems to be working as after a single from Knight, Edwards is tied down for most of the over although she takes a single off the last ball.

England did play a couple of games in Scarborough last year - but logistically, when you want all games to be televised, you need to work with the schedulers. It's been crucial that this Women's Ashes has not clashed with the men's.

  10. Eng 18-0 (target 239)published at 5 overs

Another well-timed shot from the skipper, this time an on-drive, brings Edwards her third boundary of the day. A solid start from England. Perry has 0-13 from three overs.

I don't think I've ever come to a women's international game where there's been a queue of people when I got to the ground, so they've marketed it well here.

  12. Eng 14-0 (Edwards 10*, Knight 4*)published at 4 overs

Edwards crouches to sweep a quicker ball from Jonassen, Knight is halfway down the pitch before Edwards is back on her feet, and is sent scurrying back. But the England skipper waits for the looser delivery to hit, driving a wider delivery and just as in the Australia innings, the Taunton outfield is very quick and that's four. A single to deep mid-wicket takes Edwards into double figures.

It's always been a good batting wicket here in Taunton, plenty of runs.

  14. Eng 9-0 (target 239)published at 3 overs

Perry, a thick stripe of white sun cream plastered across her nose and cheeks, has a short mid-on posted for Knight, who's off the mark as she forces a four between that mid-on fielder and the bowler, down towards the Sir Ian Botham Stand behind long-on.

  16. Eng 5-0 (Edwards 5*, Knight 0*)published at 2 overs

Here's a surprise - rather than opening up with their two star pace bowlers, Australia hand the second over to left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, who has the honour of opening the batting and the bowling today. She gives it plenty of air to Edwards, but the England captain resists the temptation to whack the cover off it this early. Maiden over.

  17. Eng 5-0 (target 239)published at 1 over

A single from Edwards brings Heather Knight on strike for the first time - having I'm sure she'll have a few family and friends in the crowd at Taunton today. She sees off the rest of Perry's over.

England have so much batting in the tank, so much experience.

  19. Eng 4-0published at 0.1 overs

Fresh from her heroics with the bat, right-arm quick Ellyse Perry takes the new ball for Australia - and it's a great start for England as Charlotte Edwards steers the first ball of the innings for four.

Umpires Steve O'Shaughnessy and Alex Wharf emerge from the Andy Caddick Pavilion, followed by the Australian fielders and England opening pair Charlotte Edwards and Heather Knight.

England need 239 to win and take the first points from the series - with Australia's formidable pace attack warming up, a clash of the titans awaits.
