Accrington Stanley missed out on promotion to the third tier for the first time after being held to a goalless draw by Stevenage.

Bristol Rovers' last-gasp win over Dagenham left John Coleman's side facing the prospect of the play-offs.

Greg Luer curled a shot just over for Boro in a first half of few chances.

Stanley improved after the break, Shay McCartan twice hitting the bar and Matty Pearson also looping a header onto the woodwork.

Accrington boss Coleman had said that winning promotion would be a greater achievement than Leicester's Premier League triumph, but they will now have to go through the play-offs if they are to reach League One.

The hosts knew before the game that a win would guarantee their place in the third tier of English football regardless of results elsewhere, and they hit the woodwork three times in a much-improved second-half performance.

McCartan struck the crossbar with an effort from outside the box, Pearson's header dropped onto the bar shortly after, and McCartan rattled the woodwork again late on.

Stanley were unable to find the winner despite their second-half dominance, with the result setting up a play-off semi-final against seventh-placed Wimbledon on 14 and 18 May.
