Newport recorded their first league win in seven games to end Oxford's unbeaten away record in League Two.

Oxford took the lead with an early goal by striker James Constable, his 105th for the club, before forward Rene Howe equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Former U's pair Ryan Burge and Chris Zebroski scored in the second half to clinch victory for Newport.

Substitute Alfie Potter managed a consolation goal for the visitors in the 88th minute.

Oxford came into the game as the only team not to have lost away from home in English football's top four tiers.

But County manager Justin Edinburgh saw his side bounce back from the weekend's 3-0 loss at Hartlepool to get a vital win at Rodney Parade.

Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh told 91Èȱ¬ Radio Wales:

"It is a massive win but thoroughly deserved. It is nice to be playing back at home, we have had five in six [game]away from home.

"I don't think people realise in our last 11 games that nine of them have been away from home. For where we are and the position we are in, I think the players have been fantastic.

"It has been a tough time for the football club and we have been laughed about but I see Crawley's game is off and I don't now whether they have had a letter from the Football League.

"It's just good to play here [home] in front of a fantastic crowd and have a fantastic performance."

Oxford caretaker boss Mickey Lewis told 91Èȱ¬ Radio Oxford:

"It's disappointing, we've been on a great run away from home, but they're a decent side, they've got a really good home record over the last couple of years, they put you under a lot of pressure, and I have to say I thought they were the better side.

"That said, we had a right go at the end, got it back to 3-2, and though it might not have been deserved, we got in good positions and we might have nicked a draw.

"We haven't really performed well. It wasn't a lack of effort, just of quality on the ball and decision-making, that sort of thing, but you have to be proud of what the team has achieved.

"We start again against Morecambe on Saturday, and let's see if we can go undefeated until the end of the season."
