A hat-trick from Harry Kane inspired England Under-21s to a comfortable victory over San Marino.

Michael Keane bagged the other goal as Gareth Southgate's team moved up to second in their European Championship qualifying group.

Keane scrambled the ball home in the fifth minute before Kane scored a 45th-minute penalty and two close-range efforts in the second half.

San Marino keeper Andrea Manzaroli was sent off after conceding the penalty.

England dominated the game from start to finish and the home side struggled after being reduced to 10 men.

Manchester United defender Keane's opener put England in command and they increased their lead in first-half stoppage time when Manzaroli brought down Liverpool's Raheem Sterling.

Tottenham's Kane stepped up to beat substitute keeper Massimo Francioni from the spot.

West Ham's Ravel Morrison and Blackpool's Tom Ince had chances before Kane scored in the 66th minute after following up his own shot.

Kane completed his hat-trick in the 89th minute by converting Spurs team-mate Tom Carroll's cross from the right.

England's next game is against Lithuania at Ipswich Town's Portman Road on Tuesday.
