Luke McCormick: Oxford United sign Truro City keeper

Oxford United have signed goalkeeper Luke McCormick from Blue Square Bet South side Truro City.

The 29-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Plymouth Argyle, moves to the U's until the end of the season.

In October 2008, he was jailed for and served half of a four-year-and-seven-month sentence.

United have also signed Burton striker Justin Richards on a deal until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old had been at Oxford on loan, failing to score in three appearances.

McCormick's last Football League game was Argyle's Championship clash against Wolves in May 2008 and chairman Ian Lenagan understands the controversy surrounding the signing.

"The tragic events in Luke's past will never go away and that is something he will have to bear for the rest of his days," he said. "He made the biggest mistake of his life and no amount of apologies will ever change what happened.

"As a club we have thought long and hard about whether to employ a player with his background, but his clear repentance, and the opportunity to allow him to rehabilitate whilst meeting our unique goalkeeping situation, resulted in our decision to sign him."

Manager Chris Wilder added: "We are very mindful of the past and the situation. Luke is very contrite and sorry about what happened.

"I have spoken to Luke at length and he knows that it will not be easy for him, but he is very humble and wants to try and make the most of the opportunity."

Meanwhile young U's striker Tyrone Marsh is joining Staines Town on loan until the summer.
