Cambridge United have signed Welling United top scorer Andy Pugh for £15,000 as well as AFC Wimbledon defender Brett Johnson on a month's loan.

Striker Pugh, 22, who has secured a deal until the summer of 2014, has netted 16 times in 23 Blue Square Bet South games this season.

The deal became public knowledge three weeks ago, but Pugh's medical was delayed by a knee injury.

"I'm glad to get it out of the way," he told 91Èȱ¬ Radio Cambridgeshire.

"It's been dragging on a while and I can finally relax now. It's been frustrating not knowing where I stood with the injury."

Pugh started his career at Gillingham, where he was limited to nine substitute appearances, and had a loan spell at Cambridge's local rivals Histon in March 2010, scoring once - against the U's - in six games, before .

Welling could also be due add-ons depending on how Pugh's time at Cambridge goes.

U's boss Jez George added: "His injury is fine but he hasn't trained for three-and-a-half weeks.

"We've got to be sensible. We've signed Andy for two-and-a-half years not two-and-a-half weeks."

Johnson, 26, has featured 15 times for Wimbledon in League Two this season.

He joined the Dons from Brentford in 2009 and counts Northampton and Aldershot among his former clubs.

The U's are short of centre-half options with Michael Wylde recovering from a groin injury and Josh Coulson set to go under the knife for a similar complaint.

Coulson and left-back James Jennings have signed new deals, keeping them at the Abbey Stadium until 2014.
