He made 21 league starts in his 18 months with Cambridge.

Charles, 22, has scored once in 20 appearances since joining the U's from Rushden in the summer.

He went on to score seven goals from 22 league starts for the now defunct club.

Meanwhile, U's boss boss Jez George has expressed his frustration after Welling United revealed their striker Andy Pugh is in talks with the U's.

The 22-year-old has scored 15 goals in 23 games this season.

"I don't like this club being pushed around by other people," George told 91Èȱ¬ Radio Cambridgeshire.

"At the same time we respect other clubs and when we do business we try to do it behind closed doors. It's a shame other people don't do the same."

Welling boss , saying: "Cambridge just want to check a small issue with his knee - a knock from the past - but everything has been agreed and the move should be confirmed very soon."

And the U's boss was disappointed that the talks had been made public.

"It's frustrating because we try and do things properly to make this club a little bit more professional again," he said.

"We've tried to stand our corner with agents and other clubs in the last few days to do the right thing by this club."

If the deal is completed it is expected to be worth up to £20,000, including add-ons.

Meanwhile, defender Michael Wylde will finally undergo surgery after playing for four months with a groin problem.
