Surrey completed victory over Derbyshire by an innings and 126 runs to secure promotion to Division One of the County Championship.

Derbyshire began day three at The Oval on 177-7, but Surrey soon bowled them out for 190 to secure maximum bowling points and enforce the follow-on.

Spinner Pragyan Ojha then took 6-42, to finish with match figures of 10-90, as the visitors crumbled to 152 all out.

Surrey's 24 points means that they finish one point above Northants.

They could yet be crowned champions by virtue of having won more games, if Middlesex only draw with Leicestershire.

Surrey's late push for promotion, back to the level they left in 2008, has been based on a run of four successive Championship wins.

Their memorable day began with Gareth Batty having Tim Groenewald caught off bat and pad, before Paul Borrington was ninth out for a resolute 87 and Ojha trapped Mark Footitt lbw to enable Surrey to ask Derbyshire to bat again.

The visitors had no answer to the hosts' Indian left-arm spinner second time around, with only Groenewald (33 not out) offering any resistance.

Surrey's victory and promotion after three years in Division Two was finally sealed late on in the afternoon session when Batty, twice a promotion winner with Worcestershire in 2004 and 2007, had Footitt caught at long off.
