Maynard's knock took him past 1,000 Championship runs for the season

Promotion-chasing Surrey piled up the runs to claim maximum batting points on day one against Derbyshire.

A second ball duck for Mark Ramprakash left Surrey wobbling early on 12-2.

But in-form Tom Maynard led the way, hitting 123, aided by key contributions from Steven Davies (73), Zander de Bruyn (61) and Jason Roy (45).

Mark Footitt took three wickets for Derbyshire on a day when crowd congestion at The Oval delayed the start by 15 minutes.

Surrey started the day one point behind second-placed Northants, who host fourth-placed Gloucestershire, and 13 adrift of London rivals Middlesex, who still lead Division Two.

Maynard, who signed from Glamorgan last winter, went past 1,000 County Championship runs for the season for the first time.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

91热爆 London 94.9's Mark Church:

"Tom Maynard's third Championship hundred of the summer was the cornerstone to Surrey achieving maximum batting points on the opening day.

"After winning the toss and batting first, Surrey knew they had to reach 400 to keep themselves firmly in the hunt for promotion.

"And, after Zander de Bruyn and Steven Davies added 120 for the third wicket before falling in quick succession, Maynard took the innings by the scruff of the neck, playing powerfully when it really mattered."
