if you hold mouse screen pointer steady on top of any picture, a small text box appears with information. These are all Harris, Uist and Berneray.

North Ulst cotton grass picture is wonderful. Never seen anything like it before. Grows wild, does it? Only in Ulst? Must look really gorgeous. Latin/botanical name s.v.p.?

Grimsay: beautiful corners (if your pictures are true to life!). The little blurb on Grimsay mentions lobsters/shell fish (sounds yummy) and a tradition of boat building. Still at it? What kinds of boats?I have decided to use the cotton grass picture for my screen saver for a while.

will look up scientific name. It grows wild, only in boggy ground ( so there is LOTS of it! ). Plenty of areas covered in it throughout the outer hebrides. It does look lovely to see a large stretch of it, although it does imply a large expanse of very rough boggy ground.

Beautiful pictures from western isles, where I believe that some of my ancestors, i.e., McDonalds and/or Camerons and/or Blues may have come from. I'm starting to research about that. Thanks

The scientific name is Eriophorum. I think this variety is E.Angustifolium which is common cotton grass. I could be wrong about particular variety, perhaps an expert will spot this and clarify. Sam - good luck with research.

SS from Charlotte,NC: there is a fail safe way to figure out quickly whether your ancestors come from the Western Isles. Order some smoked Guga from Zabar's in NYC: if you can keep it down without first having strong drink partaken, some portion of you comes from the Western Isles. Good luck.

Excellent pictures; good one! That fourth one of the east beach in Berneray is 20 minutes walk from my house. Still can't believe I live in a place this beautiful. There's pictures of more Outer Hebrides beaches on my blog: silversprite.wordpress.com

My ancestors came from South Uist. No wonder they settled in Cape Breton. We have an island as beautiful as your West Hebrides! BUT I hope to go over there, as I am doing my family tree, and want to tread the ground my forefathers stood.

Like the forest fight for sunlight that takes root in every tree the need to know where your from will gdraw you over the sea
