Description
• Two are coyote coloured (red/tawny/gray/brown)
• 1 is lighter in colour
• Initially difficult to distinguish size differences
Behaviour
• One of the darker pups is braver than the others (always outside den for longer); this pup we later named ‘Banjo’. The two suspected females, we called ‘Lola’ and ‘Meg’.
• June 20: first den emergence observed. Very brief, not fully outside the den
• June 23 AM: 3 completely outside den for 5 minutes. Walking around/on the breeding pair. Sunny weather with calm winds (first warm day in about 5 days). Stumbling while walking
• June 23 PM: nursing outside the den. Then first play; one biting at other's neck
• June 24: pups howl with adults (or try to)
• June 25: emerge from den with Atka (in Luna's absence). Remain outside the den for a short time after adults left the area
• Became bolder quite quickly after this period. When the crew returned to film in August and September, all three pups came straight up to the helicopter, and showed much interest in Gordon, perhaps recognised him, presumably due to his scent.
