Billy Hill
Played by Robert Glenister
BILLY HILL: born 1911 and learnt crime at an early age from his family, when he was sent to reform school and learnt more from lads even better at villainy than him. But he soon outgrew them and developed his own brand of ruthlessness through burglary, when he'd put glass or tacks alongside the occupants' beds; then moved onto smash and grab raids. Billy has talent and intelligence, but above all an organizing ability that he chose to put to criminal use. Perhaps his biggest assets were good looks and charm, and many fell prey to the latter, especially women. Gracie Braden was one such, despite knowing what he was like and got up to. Her daughter Cath also fell under his spell.

Billy ran a successful gang that ram-raided jewellery shops and snatched wages in transit to factories. He had a big reputation is Soho, where he fought Jack 'Spot' Cromer for turf, and at various times employed and fell out with the Kray twins and the Richardson brothers. He like both Cath's son Brian and her brother Jack, and helps them both but is finally put out of business by them when the team up to become a powerful criminal firm.
