Aunt Patience
Patience is not the vibrant beauty Mary remembers from childhood.
The years of marriage to Joss have taken their toll, leaving a tired and anxious woman in her place. She loves Joss and is completely devoted to him. Patience is forgiving of Joss’s frequent outbursts – physical as well as verbal – because she sees his vulnerability and knows that he needs her. She is pleased to have Mary at Jamaica Inn but quickly becomes nervous that Mary’s forthright attitude will lead her into trouble with Joss. So she is surprised when she sees that Joss wants to please Mary and win her approval, and this makes Patience even more nervous.
Patience played by Joanne Whalley...
The career of Joanne Whalley has been varied and one that has taken her from the cobbled paths of Coronation Street to being directed by Ron Howard in the much loved fantasy movie Willow. In her early career she also pushed out into a different direction in the art world as one of the members of the punk rock band the Slowguns, and later as the lead of Cindy and The Saffrons. However, her real love was acting and she has worked alongside such industry greats as John Hurt and Sir Ian McKellan. More recently she will be known best to viewers as Vannozza dei Cattanei in The Borgias as well as her performance as Princess Sophie in Gossip Girl.
