DR Walker is neither a doctor nor a man. Rather she is Dilys Rachel, an highly accomplished journalist who , despite the initial confusion of newspaper proprietor Edgar Bates.
Dilys seeks to shine a light on the lesser known stories of a vibrant and volatile Tyneside, whether it is unrest at the Belgian colony in Birtley, radical Russian shipbuilders or heroic women workers like tram conductress .
Her instincts as a campaigning reporter are reined in by sympathetic but cautious editor Stanley Hobbs, who knows the risks involved in exposing events that the authorities would rather keep from the pages of the local press. From the Examiner, Dilys moves onto the Workers' Dreadnought under the editorship of Sylvia Pankhurst and experiences first-hand the Red Clydeside movement in Glasgow.
