Guy Johnston is one of the leading cellists of his generation. His career rapidly developed after he won 91Èȱ¬ Young Musician 2000, going on to open the Proms in 2001 and win a Classical Brit Award. He has performed with many leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic, 91Èȱ¬ Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, the Philharmonia, English Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin and St.Petersburg Symphony.

Last season Guy performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra among others. Guy's debut recital CD, with pianist Kathryn Stott received much critical acclaim - the New York Times described Guy's "burnished and varied sound..."

He has recorded the Gregson Cello Concerto and the Moeran Cello Concerto and has plans to record David Matthews' 'Dark Pastoral' with the RSNO. Guy recently Guest Lead the Australian Chamber Orchestra on tour. He is a newly appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Music and Artistic Director of the Hatfield House Chamber Music Festival.

Guy plays on a 1714 David Tecchler cello. It is currently made available to him by the Guy Johnston Cello Trust, which is being established by Nigel Brown and the Stradivari Trust to raise the funds needed to secure the instrument.
