‘Mate crime’ is exploitation, abuse or theft involving someone claiming to be a friend. It's often associated with the elderly, or people with learning disabilities - but it can happen to anyone, and has become easier in recent years with the development of online friendships and relationships, as well as in-person. Our former copper Rav Wilding explains how many victims suffer from loneliness and isolation, and might be looking for validation from other people. He shares how to spot the red flags of a fake friend - including taking your money and making you feel uncomfortable - and explains how to get help straight away.
