The Battle of Trones Wood
Trones Wood is a a small, peaceful and picturesque place in northern France. It's surrounded by the rolling fields of the Somme region - countryside which reminded soldiers of home in the First World War.
One hundred years ago today the men of the 6th battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment went over the top and in to Trones Wood. Amidst the chaos, confusion and terror of that fight, many men from all over the county lost their lives in that wood. Others bore wounds for the rest of their lives. And some were simply heroic.
A century on, military historian Jon Cooksey has been back to Trones Wood with Bernie Keith and Graham McKechnie, to tell the story of what happened to these Northamptonshire men on 14 July 1916...
