How to find water in the desert
The Kalahari has little standing water. So if you’re ever caught out in this unforgiving land with nothing to drink, the 'Bi bulb' can be a life saver. It’s a tuber that soaks up water from the surrounding sand and holds it for months, providing an underground water source when there are no springs to see.
But you’ve got to know what you’re looking for… buried deep underground, this plant could easily be overlooked. Reassuringly, the Bushmen’s knowledge of the plants in the region is incredible.
