'Tube strike will go ahead' - RMT

Strikes planned for First Great Western (FGW) train services and London Underground are set to go ahead, the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) has said.

The union plans a 24-hour strike for First Great Western train services on Sunday, a 72-hour stoppage over the bank holiday weekend and two 24-hour strikes planned on London Underground next week.

The strike is being held over threats to jobs, services and the introduction of the new Hitachi Inter City trains.

The union said it had not reached agreement on "fundamental issues".

"The tube strike will go ahead," said RMT assistant general secretary Mick Lynch.

The RMT was continuing negotiations with FGW in an attempt to get "a square deal for our customers and London transport", added Mr Lynch.

"There’s always a deal to be done," he said.
