Parisian mayor says she will always "defend free expression" following the attack at satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo which killed 12 people and injured seven.

The attack marks a "crucial moment for democracies of the world", Frederique Kalandra, Mayor of the 20th district in Paris where another office of the satirical paper is based, has said.

The Charlie Hebdo journalists could have been killed "wherever they lived", she continued "you can always say we should have put more policeman" but the attack could have taken place "elsewhere" in the city.

Three masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles at the Charlie Hebdo office in central Paris and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car.
